Good Results From Studies Showing The Amount of Fat Returning After Liposuction

In a press release September 10, News Medical reports that long-term benefits are achieved through liposuction—a difference from some news sources that say fat does come back, and sometimes in different areas.

Dr. Eric Swanson concludes from his studies that both Abdominoplasty and liposuction have long-term positive effects on proportions of the body and reduction of fat.  “There remained a significant reduction in hip circumference in patients treated with liposuction and in the mid-abdominal and hip measurements of 22 patients who underwent liposuction and Abdominoplasty,” Swanson said.

The average patient lost nearly five pounds when liposuction and Abdominoplasty were combined.

A Naples, Florida plastic surgeon, Dr. Elizabeth Fox says that her own patient’s results support this. “Patients who undergo liposuction of the abdomen or an Abdominoplasty successfully prevent the lower belly fullness from reoccurring even with weight gain,” which bodes well for people seeking information on the benefits of liposuction or Abdominoplasty.

Further research should be conducted as it takes more than a book of business from one practice to really get an idea on the widespread effect of the surgeries, but it also reveals that previous news about the procedures being “ineffective” long term also need more study.

Hawaii Has Second Lowest Adult Obesity Rate – But for How Long?

A report released by “Trust for America’s Health” and the “Robert Wood Johnson Foundation” ranked each of the states according to their obesity rate.  Colorado ranked as the least obese with a rate of 20.7%, and Hawaii came in second place with an adult obesity rate of 21.8%.

While being ranked in second for “least obese” is great news, what is the more shocking to the researchers is the rate in which obesity is on the rise in the state.  Over the past 15 years, Hawaii’s adult obesity rate has nearly doubled.  In 1995, the obesity rate in the state was reported as 10.6%.

Unfortunately, such dramatic increases are common amongst each of the states.  The report has forecasted that 44% of all adults in the United States will be obese by the year 2030, less than 20 short years away.  “In the United States, medical costs associated with treating preventable obesity-related diseases are estimated to increase by $48 billion to $66 billion per year by 2030,” the study stated.

It was also estimated that at this rate, Hawaii’s obesity rate could increase by more than 12% by 2030.

Dr Risa Lavizzo-Mourey, the president and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, has said that the study shows two different futures for our nation’s health.  “At every level of government, we must pursue policies that preserve health, prevent disease, and reduce health care costs.  Nothing less is acceptable.”

Does Laser Spider Vein Treatment Cause Hyperpigmentation?

Varicose veins and “spider veins” can not only be unsightly, but they can also be itchy and uncomfortable.  Both issues are the two most common reasons why women and men seek treatments to eliminate them.  A concern that often is brought up at a spider vein laser therapy consultation is that of hyperpigmentation.  Can it happen to you?

Spider Veins

Those with darker skin often are concerned that they may suffer from hypopigmentation (a permanent lightening of the skin) and those with lighter skin are concerned about hyperpigmentation (a permanent darkening of the skin).  The truth is that both are a risk that come with laser treatments, but there are lasers available for dark and light skin types that reduce the likelihood of either occurring,

Sclerotherapy – An Alternative Solution for Spider Veins

An alternative to laser treatments is “sclerotherapy”.  This type of treatment is regularly referred to as the “gold standard” type of treatment for reducing and eliminating spider veins.  Rather than use a laser to reduce the appearance of the veins, a small needle is used to inject a solution directly into them.  Over a period of time, the spider veins then begin to fade away, leaving individuals with smooth and even-looking skin.

The real benefit here is that there’s no risk of hyper or hypopigmentation with sclerotherapy.  Like laser treatments, however, individuals will often need to return for more than one treatment, depending on the severity of the spider veins.

When Sclerotherapy May Not Be Appropriate

Sclerotherapy has helped reduce and eliminate spider veins and, in many cases, has also successfully treated larger blue veins and large varicose veins.  It’s important for individuals to know that this form of treatment may not always be the most effective for larger, darker veins.  It’s important that, before deciding on laser treatments or sclerotherapy, an individual goes in for a consultation prior to getting any procedures done. That way, they can be appropriate assessed for the right form of treatment.

“Movement” Versus “Exercise” and Their Affects On Your Health

In today’s busy and fast paced world, a lot of us are assured that doing simple every day tasks will help keep us “young” and “fit”.  Taking the stairs at work, gardening, and vacuuming are some of the many “easy workout suggestions” that a lot of websites and doctors encourage and condone, but many are now saying that it’s important for people to know the difference between “movement” and “exercise”.

Movement is generally defined as an individual getting their heart rate going between a maximum rate of 50 to 75%.  Exercise, on the other hand, is defined as the heart working at 85 to 100%.  The difference between the two, from a health perspective, is huge in terms of anti aging.  Movement is important in terms of our body receiving all of the essential nutrients it needs by increasing our blood circulation, oxygenation, and lymphatic drainage.  To enjoy any anti aging benefits from “movement”, however, we have to really get our hearts pumping and engage in true methods of exercise. Doing so allows our bodies to secrete natural anti-aging hormones.

Rules of Anti-Aging Exercise

1)    Go for Compound Movements:  By mixing large muscle group exercises in with small muscle group exercises, you’re maximizing your work out, your anti aging capabilities, and you’re also maximizing your weight loss.  Performing lunges while doing bicep curls with weights is a good example of a compound movement.

2)    Keep it Intense: You should be striving to push yourself right to the limit, and then take little rests in between.  Even if you do a short exercise session that’s 30 minutes long with 30 second rests between sets can be more beneficial than taking 1.5 hours to do the same exercises with lengthy breaks in between.  High intensity workouts help increase the production of lactic acid, which in turn increases our HGH production and endogenous anti-oxidant production.

3)    Be Explosive: Explosive movements, like jump rope or performing “skaters”, help increase the body’s strength, power, and anti-aging hormone secretion.

More Studies Telling Americans to Lay Off the Soda

It’s no secret that one of the primary reasons behind Americans obesity epidemic is sugar, and one of the prime culprits behind our regular overdosing of sugar is soda.

The New England Journal of Medicine released three new studies that strove to discover if there was a link between America’s love for soda and our increasing waistlines.  All three studies found that, without a doubt, soda consumption is definitely one of the main reasons behind our nation’s weight gain.

“I know of no other category of food whose elimination can produce weight loss in such a short period of time,” said research leader and director of the New Balance Foundation Obesity Prevention Center, Dr David Ludwig.  “The most effective single target for an intervention aimed at reducing obesity is sugary beverages.”

The American Beverage Association (ABA) says that no one single food product can be solely responsible for America’s weight gain, but they also do not deny the fact that sugar impedes weight loss.  While they state that these studies and opinion pieces that focus on sugary beverages “do nothing meaningful to address this serious issue”, everyone is in agreement that something should be done.  A report that was released this week has estimated that 44% of the American population will be obese by 2030.

New York City is the first city to adopt a full on “ban” of soda that comes in sizes larger than 16oz, and more cities are looking to adopt similar regulations as weight-related healthcare costs continue to mount.

Do Non-Surgical Breast Enhancements Have Unpredictable Outcomes?

The board-certified plastic surgeons at the Plastic Surgery Center of the South recently met to discuss the outcome of women using non-surgical breast enhancements, such as topical creams and herbal remedies, versus surgical enhancements such as breast lifts.  One of the main concerns was the lack of predictable outcomes that come from using such products.

“Even if it does work, no one knows if the results will last,” says Dr James E. Leak, a partner in the practice.  “For whatever reason, it may cause the breasts to swell up a bit, but chances are that they will return to their previous appearance once the effect wears off.”

Leak recommends implants, the removal of excess skin, and surgical reshaping of the breasts for guaranteed long-term results.

Dr Petrosky, another surgeon at the practice, has also warned that all because a product says it’s “natural” does not by any means guarantee that it’s “safe”.  “Take puerifica mirifica for example,” Petrosky said.  “This herb from Thailand is the primary ingredient in many ‘breast enlargement’ creams.  It hasn’t been thoroughly studied.  It’s not FDA approved.  No one really knows what possible side effects it may have.”

The best way to ensure long lasting and safe breast alterations, the doctors agree, is to receive an in-depth consultation with a board accredited surgeon and to then choose from one of the many surgical enhancement options available.

Breast Cancer Survivors Model Reconstruction Surgery Results

A press release by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) on August 21st reveals the intent to have an event of “show and tell” for breast reconstruction awareness day USA (BRA) in New Orleans.

BRA is on October 17 and a number of women who have successful mastectomies and reconstruction surgery of the breasts want women who are facing the surgery to know their options.

Unfortunately, a survey recently performed by Harris Interactive discovered that as many as 70% of breast cancer patients haven’t even been informed of their options.

As a two-time survivor of breast cancer, Kim Sport feels passionate about sharing her experiences and results and has done so with smaller groups of women who have been diagnosed. She looks forward to BRA day and raising awareness among many more women.

It’s not always helpful to simply look at before and after pictures. Dr. Malcolm Roth, president of ASPS wants to provide this event to provide “women a forum to get the information they need,” which is important considering that the survey revealed that less than a quarter of women are familiar with the outcome of reconstructive surgery, know all the options available, and have been educated on the impact of timing with the mastectomy and reconstructive surgery.

You can find more information on BRA’s New Orleans event at plasticsurgerythemeeting.org.

How To Enhance Your Eye Winkers

Women love to have the confidence of eyes that cause double takes and surreptitious glances across a room. More than any other part of the face, women focus more on the eyes than any other feature when it comes to makeup, cosmetic supplements, anti-aging products, and even plastic surgery procedures. This is what makes Botox and dermal fillers a multi-million dollar industry.

More than ever, the eyelashes have become a cosmetic focus in which most celebrities won’t walk outside without the benefit of false eyelashes. Even photographers will now recommend their female clients to wear false eyelashes for the best possible photographic outcome, particularly for engagement or wedding portraits.

For those who don’t have the time to mess with false eyelashes or for those who have a low self-image thanks to sparse, light, and/or short eyelashes, there is now a popular prescription treatment that is a semi-permanent solution to the problem.

Accidentally discovered as a side effect to a popular glaucoma eye drop treatment, prostaglandin or bimatoprost eye drops are now commonly marketed as the eyelash enhancer medicine (Latisse is one of the name brands) that thickens and darkens lashes as much as 106% within a two-month period of time.

Thicker, darker, and longer lashes automatically make the person wearing them look younger and more beautifully enhanced. Simply wearing mascara as opposed to bare lashes often bear testimony to this fact.

The drawback to this medical treatment is that it is expensive and requires a doctor’s prescription. For those who want the youthful appearance of thick and long lashes, there is still a large selection of various types, styles, colors, and lengths of false eyelashes at a cosmetic counter nearby.

For fast results, try a cosmetic eyelash thickener that you brush on prior to your mascara application. You can have fuller lashes in seconds without the hassle of false eyelashes or the expense of a eyelash enhancing prescription.

How To Detoxify for Optimal Health and Anti-Aging Properties

In a NaturalNews.com article August 23, JB Bardot discusses the best food to gently detoxify the body from genetically modified foods, pesticides, drugs, chemicals, metals, and other toxins.

Heart Shaped Image of Different Vegetables Many everyday Americans are riddled with these toxins from radiation, chemotherapy, vaccines, pesticides, and even Teflon. It’s becoming more difficult to avoid exposure, even for the most careful holistic and organic consumer.

In addition to eliminating as much of the exposure to these harmful toxins as possible, people are recommended to use these three “super foods” to help eliminate toxins from the body.

  • Chlorella

This is a fresh water algae sea vegetable that is known to remove heavy metals such as mercury and lead from cells. It is also a great food to grow “good” bacteria in the digestive tract, aiding with digestive tract issues like constipation, diverticulosis, Crohns, colitis, or ulcers. It’s a great antioxidant and relieves tension and PMS symptoms. Bardot advises to start with a low dose to avoid cramping, nausea, diarrhea, and/or gas.

Beware of Chlorella from Japan. While Japan used to be where one could obtain the best Chlorella, after the earthquake and subsequent nuclear power plant meltdown at Fukushima, Japan, radiation exposure is an issue.

  • Cilantro

Also known to eliminate metals such as mercury from the body. It’s also contains properties for an anti-fungal and anti-bacterial agent that helps with inflammation and infections. Recent research suggests that it also may improve memory and may be helpful for Alzheimer’s. Besides,  it’s an easy-to-grow herb that is a great addition to cooking.

  • Wheatgrass

Wheatgrass is a popular substance in the juicing community. For good reason, too; it contains all of the amino acids that are essential for optimal health, contains many nutritional benefits with vitamins and minerals, and is used to remove toxins. Studies have shown a benefit for colitis, lower risk of colon cancer, and reducing rectal bleeding.

Be careful when selecting these super foods that you choose ones that are organic and grown from non-GM seeds, otherwise you are contributing to the toxic levels of pesticide in your body rather than eliminating it.

Could Social Media Be Responsible for Surge in Chin Implants?

In a press release dated August 29, 2012, a plastic surgeon in Atlanta, Dr. Deutsch, published an account that points to social media outlets such as Skype and Facetime for people making changes when the effects of aging are more than the user can bear.

Because Skype and Facetime are based on real-time video conferencing communications between people, more people are seeing how they look to others online through their Internet software that is broadcasting their image and as they age they dislike what they see. Because it is mostly about face-to-face communication, it is the face that gets the scrutiny.

The effects of an aging neckline include a double chin, excess neck fat or loose, sagging skin, and a slacking jawline from jowls or extra weight. For this reason, many people are seeking mentoplasty: Chin implants. Mentoplasty is a fairly easy procedure that a patient could feel comfortable about having as opposed to a major face lift or body lift. It only requires about an hour of surgery time and provides amazing results. A weak or recessive chin can make a person feel insecure and lack confidence while a strong jawline provides balance to the facial features and profile, giving confidence back.

Wellness and Cosmetic spas should seek local social media users who are in their forties and fifties and might want to make a change to the face they present on the Internet. It could be for the social networking value or even for enhancement to job opportunities.
